My Thoughts on My Childhood Friends Are Trying To Kill Me
My Childhood Friends Are Trying To Kill Me is quite the rollercoaster of a novel, and honestly, my feelings are just as mixed as the reviews I've read. It's a story that starts with a lot of promise, but whether it delivers on that promise seems to depend heavily on individual tastes and expectations.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a female lead forced to cross-dress, navigating complex family relationships, and, oh yeah, her childhood friends are trying to off her. It's a potent mix of drama, fantasy, and a hint of reverse harem that definitely piqued my interest. I was eager to see how the author would weave these elements together.
What Works Well
The early chapters, for me, were definitely the strongest. I found the MC, Lelia, to be a sympathetic character, and I appreciated the time spent developing her relationships with the male leads. The intrigue surrounding her past and the reasons behind her friends' animosity kept me invested. Also, several readers mentioned enjoying the initial "healing" arc as Lelia began to escape her difficult past, and I agree that these moments were well-written and emotionally resonant. The complex family dynamics definitely add a layer of depth, making it more than just a simple revenge story.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I started to see some of the issues that other readers pointed out. The introduction of a "system," based on a crafting game from Lelia's previous life, felt jarring and out of place. It seemed like a convenient plot device that undermined Lelia's agency and made the story feel less organic. Some felt that the author lost focus in the second half, introducing forced events and illogical plot points. Also, the character development of the male leads seemed to suffer, with some becoming overly obsessive.

Final Verdict
Overall, My Childhood Friends Are Trying To Kill Me is a novel with a lot of potential that, in my opinion, doesn't quite live up to it. While the initial premise and character relationships are engaging, the introduction of the system, forced plot developments, and uneven character arcs ultimately detract from the overall experience. It might be worth a read if you're a fan of reverse harems and don't mind some heavy doses of drama, but be prepared for a bumpy ride. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
