"My Brother Is an Idol" promised a fluffy romance set against the backdrop of the entertainment world, but my experience was a bit of a mixed bag. While I can see the potential appeal, some elements fell flat for me.

First Impressions

Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a female protagonist navigating the complexities of having an idol for a brother. The shoujo genre tag also piqued my interest. However, I quickly found myself struggling to connect with the characters, particularly the female lead.

What Works Well

Despite my reservations, I do see where some readers found enjoyment. The second male lead definitely has some charm. I can understand the appeal of a character who is dependable, strong, and offers constructive support. The family dynamic, while unconventional, also adds an interesting layer to the story, and the manhwa adaptation is easy to read.

Unfortunately, I found myself agreeing with some of the criticisms I've seen raised. The dialogue often felt unnatural, and the plot progression seemed forced at times. The female lead's actions were occasionally frustrating, making it difficult to root for her. The male lead, while intended to be endearing, came across as somewhat weak and insecure, which detracted from the romance for me. The cringe factor was also rather high during some of the interactions between the main characters.

While it has moments of sweetness and a compelling second male lead, the weak characterizations, stilted dialogue, and somewhat misleading premise ultimately left me disappointed. If you're a die-hard fan of shoujo romance and can overlook these flaws, you might find something to enjoy. However, for me, it fell short of expectations. I'd give it a tentative 2.5 out of 5 stars.
