My Thoughts on May I Kill You, Your Majesty?
"May I Kill You, Your Majesty?" certainly grabbed my attention with its provocative title, and after diving in, I can see why it has a solid 4-star rating. This fantasy romance, with its shoujo vibes, definitely has a lot going for it, especially for those who enjoy a strong female lead and a dash of royalty.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are intriguing. We're thrown into a world of aristocracy, adopted children, and hints of past trauma. The dynamic between the female lead (FL) and the male lead (ML) is immediately captivating. There's a clear power imbalance, with the ML initially presenting as a somewhat intimidating figure. However, it's not a simple damsel-in-distress story, which is a huge plus in my book.
What Works Well
What I particularly enjoyed was the FL's agency. She's not a pushover. She has her own goals and actively pursues them, even if it means going against the ML. This determination is refreshing. I also appreciated the slow-burn romance. The characters don't immediately fall head-over-heels for each other; instead, they develop a connection over time, building trust and understanding. The eventual confession, happening around chapter 120 (or so I've heard!), feels earned and satisfying. The ML's initial "bastard" behavior, rooted in his own dark past and distrust, adds depth to his character. He's not just a generic cold duke; there's a reason behind his actions, making his eventual shift in affection more believable. The fact that the FL doesn't just forgive him immediately but makes him work for her forgiveness is a definite win!
Areas of Concern
While the novel is generally well-received, I do have a minor reservation. I've heard that some plot points might not be fully explained, leaving some readers with unanswered questions. I hope these gaps are filled in as the story progresses or in future side stories.
Final Verdict
Overall, "May I Kill You, Your Majesty?" is a worthwhile read for fans of fantasy romance with strong characters and a well-developed plot. The slow-burn romance, combined with the FL's agency and the ML's compelling backstory, makes for an engaging and satisfying story. Despite a few minor concerns about unexplained plot points, the novel's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more!
