Description
Lena joined the knight’s order to earn a dowry. Despite being mistreated by her tyrannical superior, she persisted in her efforts to earn the dowry. Granted a vacation, she planned to spend time with her fiancé and improve their relationship, only to discover his infidelity. After breaking off the engagement, Lena raided her superior’s liquor stash to console herself, only to have him confess to her… “You don’t have a fiancé to worry about anymore.” Lena just blinked her eyes dumbly. The alcohol-addled thought process could not comprehend the meaning behind his words, leaving her frozen “Lena Leshuriel.” He took a step closer and met her gaze. “How about formally dating me?” Lena was unable to refuse as her superior leaned in to kiss her.

My Thoughts on It’s A Mistake, Captain!
I went into "It's A Mistake, Captain!" with a healthy dose of curiosity, given the mix of genres and tags. The premise of a "friends to lovers" story with a comedic undertone, set against a backdrop of knights and social disparity, definitely piqued my interest. However, I also approached it with caution, considering some of the criticisms I'd seen.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the potential for humor and the intriguing dynamic between the protagonists. The "love and hate" relationship angle is always a fun trope to explore, and I was eager to see how the author would navigate the complexities of their connection. The European-esque setting also added a layer of charm.
What Works Well
The comedic elements definitely shine through, offering moments of levity amidst the potentially heavier themes of betrayal and social status. I appreciated the author's attempt to create a world with a distinct atmosphere and characters who, at least initially, felt like they had the potential for growth. I also liked that the female lead was portrayed as physically strong at the beginning.
Areas of Concern
However, I have some reservations about the male lead's behavior. I found his actions and motivations at times questionable. His possessiveness can veer into uncomfortable territory, and his methods of expressing affection might not resonate with all readers. I also found myself wondering about the female lead's agency and whether her initial strength was maintained throughout the story. The reliance on drunkenness to advance the romance also feels a little cheap and undermines the potential for genuine emotional connection.
Final Verdict
"It’s A Mistake, Captain!" has potential, and I think some readers might find enjoyment in the humorous aspects and the flawed characters. However, the problematic behavior of the male lead and the potential for the female lead's agency to be compromised are significant concerns. I'd recommend approaching this novel with caution and being mindful of the potentially triggering themes. Ultimately, whether or not you enjoy this story will likely depend on your tolerance for morally grey characters and potentially unhealthy relationship dynamics.
