Description
Adele was greeted by Emperor Karl’s “beloved” concubine upon their arrival at Ehmont Palace on the day of her wedding. To hear his concubine say “I want to enlighten you about his Majesty’s likes” was alarming. She wed the Emperor, whom she had never met before. He showed up late to the ceremony and then immediately left to visit his beloved concubine at his palace. The one person Adele was certain wouldn’t show up for her wedding invitation, the Duke of Valdre and Commander of the Imperial Guard, Lionel Baldr, had unexpectedly arrived.

My Thoughts on I Will Surrender My Position as the Empress
"I Will Surrender My Position as the Empress" is a web novel that immediately throws you into a world of political intrigue, marital discord, and simmering emotions. It's a story about Empress Adele, trapped in an arranged marriage with an Emperor who, shall we say, isn't winning any husband-of-the-year awards. While the premise feels familiar, echoing elements of other popular stories in the genre, there's a definite pull that kept me reading.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the story establishes a palpable sense of frustration. The Empress is clearly unhappy, and the Emperor's actions... well, they're less than admirable. I immediately felt sympathetic towards Adele and found myself rooting for her to find a way out of her predicament. The European-inspired setting adds a layer of richness to the narrative, and the focus on courtly life and aristocratic power struggles provides a compelling backdrop.
What Works Well
The novel excels at portraying the Empress's internal struggles. Her emotional desolation and the weight of her responsibilities are vividly depicted. The supporting characters, like Lady Giggs, add depth and provide much-needed support for Adele. Even the "villainous" characters, like Diane, are given some semblance of justification for their actions, making them feel more complex than simple antagonists. I also appreciated the novel's willingness to delve into the complexities of duty, love, and personal sacrifice, themes that resonate deeply within the story.

Final Verdict
"I Will Surrender My Position as the Empress" is a compelling read, particularly if you enjoy stories with strong female leads navigating complex political landscapes and messy relationships. It might not be entirely unique in its premise, but the well-developed characters and the exploration of weighty themes kept me invested. Just be prepared for some frustrating moments along the way! I'm cautiously optimistic to see how Adele's journey unfolds and whether she ultimately finds the happiness she deserves.
