My Thoughts on I was Planning to Suck Up to the Villain, But… ?
"I Was Planning to Suck Up to the Villain, But… ?" promised a lighthearted romp through familiar transmigration tropes, and for the most part, it delivered. It's a completed story, so I knew I could dive in without the agony of waiting for updates, which is always a plus in my book.
First Impressions
The premise is fairly standard: a female protagonist finds herself reborn as a villainess and attempts to avoid her doom by cozying up to the story's antagonist. The initial chapters were definitely engaging, and the humor landed well. I found myself chuckling at the female lead's antics and her… unique priorities.
What Works Well
The dynamic between the female lead and the male lead is the strongest part of the story. Their constant bickering and misunderstandings were entertaining, and I appreciated that the author didn't take things too seriously. The female lead's obsession with food, especially steak, was a quirky and endearing character trait that provided plenty of comedic relief. The story is easy to read, and nothing is too heavy, so if you're looking for a low-stakes read, this might be for you.
Areas of Concern
My main issue stems from the repetitive nature of the "will they, won't they" dance between the leads. The constant back-and-forth of "does he love me?" and "does she love me?" became a bit tiresome after a while. Also, while the female lead's spunky personality is initially charming, her recklessness sometimes felt a little over the top. I did think the ending felt a bit rushed, and I would have loved to see more from the male lead's point of view to understand his perspective better.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I Was Planning to Suck Up to the Villain, But… ?" is a decent read if you're in the mood for a light and predictable story. While it has its flaws, the entertaining interactions between the leads and the overall comedic tone make it an enjoyable way to unwind. I'd recommend it as a one-time read for those who enjoy the villainess trope with a healthy dose of humor.
