My Thoughts on Forget Vivian
"Forget Vivian" promised a fantasy romance with a strong female lead and a dash of amnesia, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also left me with a few reservations. The premise definitely piqued my interest, and I was eager to dive into this world of aristocracy, magic, and potentially angsty romance.
First Impressions
The initial chapters certainly grabbed my attention. The set-up is intriguing, with Vivian making a drastic decision to erase her own memories. The European-esque setting adds a nice layer of atmosphere, and the hints of a "sickly" character and the inevitable misunderstandings had me settling in for a potentially dramatic ride.
What Works Well
The novel excels at creating a compelling female protagonist. Vivian is clearly a capable woman, and her choice to manipulate her own memories, however questionable, speaks to a certain level of agency. I also found myself drawn to the potential for emotional conflict. The idea of a protagonist falling in love first, only to have her memories wiped, sets the stage for a potentially heart-wrenching and ultimately satisfying romance, assuming the male lead steps up.
Areas of Concern
The plot hinges on Vivian's decision to erase her memories, and I'm not entirely convinced by the logic. It felt a little contrived, a convenient plot device to kickstart the story rather than a truly believable choice for the character. The pacing also felt a bit slow, dwelling perhaps a little too much on the initial drama without pushing the core narrative forward. There's also the question of how easily Vivian's memory manipulation is accepted by the world around her. It seems like such a large-scale action would have more significant and immediate repercussions.

Final Verdict
"Forget Vivian" has the potential to be a captivating fantasy romance, but it needs to address some of its shortcomings to truly shine. The premise is intriguing, and the female lead is compelling, but the pacing, the questionable logic behind the memory erasure, and the male lead's initial behavior hold it back. I'm cautiously optimistic that the story will improve as it progresses, but for now, I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
