My Thoughts on Even a Scoundrel Gets Tired
"Even a Scoundrel Gets Tired" promised a lot, and while it had moments that hooked me, the overall experience left me feeling… tired, much like the title suggests. The premise, a cunning protagonist navigating a fantasy academy with a dark past, was initially intriguing. However, as the story progressed, I found myself struggling to stay invested.
First Impressions
The opening chapters were definitely the strongest. I was drawn in by the protagonist's ambition and the hints of conflict with his family and past. The idea of a character willing to do anything to reach the top is always compelling, and I was eager to see how he would navigate the challenges ahead. The early world-building also held promise, with the alternate world and aristocratic setting providing a rich backdrop for the story to unfold.
What Works Well
The initial character development of the protagonist was a definite highlight. Seeing him grapple with his circumstances and begin to forge his own path was engaging. The early focus on family and past conflicts also added a layer of depth that kept me interested.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the initial spark faded as the story went on. I found the protagonist's personality to be inconsistent, making it difficult to connect with him. One moment he's empathetic, the next he's seemingly throwing a tantrum. This lack of consistency made his motivations feel unclear and his actions unpredictable in a way that wasn't always satisfying.
The power progression also felt rushed and unearned. Instead of a gradual journey of discovery and growth, the protagonist's advancement seemed to rely on time skips and potion chugging, which diminished my investment in his overall development. The plot felt disjointed at times, with characters appearing and disappearing without making a significant impact. This made the story feel chaotic and unfocused, making it harder to follow the overall narrative.

Final Verdict
"Even a Scoundrel Gets Tired" has a promising premise and a strong start, but ultimately falls short due to inconsistent character development, rushed power progression, and a disjointed plot. While the initial chapters may pique your interest, be prepared for a potentially frustrating reading experience as the story progresses. I can't give it a wholehearted recommendation.
