My Thoughts on Barber in New York
"Barber in New York" plunges you headfirst into the gritty underworld of 1940s New York, a world far removed from fluffy romance. This story is dark, raw, and unapologetically mature, and while it might not be for everyone, I found myself surprisingly engrossed.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are definitely a trial by fire. The story throws you right into the thick of things, with Meiyan, our protagonist, getting kidnapped by the powerful and enigmatic syndicate leader, Han. It's a confusing and intense start, but stick with it. The author gradually unravels the complex web of relationships and motivations that drive the narrative.
What Works Well
The characters are the real stars of this show. Meiyan's stubbornness and reluctance to trust, born from past trauma, feel incredibly authentic. Han, despite his possessive tendencies and position as a dominant figure, is surprisingly nuanced. He's not a saint by any means, but his moments of genuine care and willingness to apologize add depth to his character. The dynamic between Meiyan and Han is complicated, fraught with tension, and undeniably captivating. It's a slow burn that explores themes of trust, power, and the possibility of love in the darkest of circumstances. The writing style really lends itself to the dark and desperate tone of the novel.
Areas of Concern
I can see why some readers might be put off by certain elements. Han's internal monologues, where he sometimes refers to Meiyan as a "wounded animal," could be unsettling for some. Also, there are moments where the translation feels a bit clunky, making it harder to fully immerse yourself in the story.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Barber in New York" is a compelling read. If you're looking for a light and fluffy romance, steer clear. But if you enjoy dark, gritty mafia stories with complex characters and a slow-burn romance, this might just be your cup of tea. The author has created a world that is both fascinating and disturbing, and the characters are so well-developed that I found myself invested in their fates, even when I didn't necessarily agree with their choices. I'd recommend giving it a shot, just be prepared for a bumpy ride.
