Adagio
By covering the sky, 하늘가리기
2020
Description
The two opposing families, with generations of feud, received an order from the king: “The two families must become in-laws to bury the hatchet and start anew.” Ju family’s youngest daughter, Ju Ha-young: “Do you think I want to get married to you? I don’t like you either.” Yeon family’s second son, Yeon Mu-eun: “Would you prefer to die rather than be the daughter-in-law of the Yeon family?” They held presumptions about each other based on the rumours they heard, giving rise to misunderstandings between them. In time, their feelings slowly changed for each other. ‘It’s strange.’ Can there be no smoke without fire? Ha-young could not understand the bad rumors surrounding her good-natured husband. ‘You’re mine.’ Mu-eun felt an overwhelming joy as he looked at his wife’s dear smile. He desired that smile.

My Thoughts on Adagio
"Adagio" promised a captivating enemies-to-lovers tale set in ancient times, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself with mixed feelings upon finishing it. The premise, an arranged marriage between members of feuding families, had me hooked from the start.
First Impressions
The initial chapters drew me in with a well-established setting and the promise of intense family conflict. I was particularly intrigued by the rumors surrounding the male lead and how those rumors would play into the dynamic between the couple. There was a definite Romeo and Juliet vibe, but with the author's reputation for crafting compelling stories, I had high expectations for a unique twist.
What Works Well
The author's writing style is undeniably smooth and engaging. I appreciated the focus on the couple's growth as they navigated their arranged marriage and family issues. The initial animosity slowly melted away as they resolved misunderstandings and began to truly see each other. I also enjoyed the intimate scenes, which were well-written and added depth to their relationship.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance, I felt the overall plot could have been more fleshed out. The synopsis hinted at a deeper exploration of the family conflict, but it felt somewhat superficial in the end. I was hoping for a more intricate political landscape and a greater sense of resolution between the feuding families. The ending felt rushed, with the couple essentially separating themselves from the male lead's family to achieve peace. I couldn't help but feel the story ended abruptly, leaving me wanting more.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Adagio" is a decent read, especially if you're a fan of the author's other works. The romance is sweet, and the characters are likable. However, if you're expecting a complex political drama with a deeply explored family conflict, you might be disappointed. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a good way to spend an afternoon, but it's not a story that will stick with me for a long time.
