My Thoughts on 101st Confession
"101st Confession" promised a rollercoaster of emotions, and it certainly delivered... though perhaps not always in the way I'd hoped. With its European ambience, noble setting, and a central theme of unrequited love, I was intrigued. The premise of a heroine confessing 99 times to her childhood friend had potential for angst and eventual triumph. However, after diving in, I found myself with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were engaging, painting a picture of Lucia's long-standing affection for Herwin. I found myself rooting for her, even as the rejections piled up. The story does a good job of establishing the childhood connection between the leads and setting the stage for the central conflict. I was eager to see how Herwin would finally come to his senses.
What Works Well
The novel's strength lies in its characters. Lucia is a determined and ultimately resilient protagonist. I appreciated her persistence, but also her eventual decision to move on and build a life for herself. The side characters, especially Bern and Arista, add depth and complexity to the narrative. I particularly enjoyed that the exes weren't portrayed as villains but as individuals with their own feelings and motivations. The messy, interconnected relationships felt surprisingly realistic.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with Herwin, the male lead. His slow realization of his feelings felt contrived and, frankly, undeserved. Lucia spends 13 years pouring her heart out, only for him to finally notice her when she's about to marry someone else? It felt like he didn't earn her in the end. The pacing also felt uneven at times, with certain plot points dragging while others felt rushed. I also felt that the redemption arc was too short and lacking depth.

Final Verdict
"101st Confession" has its moments. The angst is palpable, the characters are well-developed, and the themes of love, loss, and regret are explored in a compelling way. However, the frustrating male lead and uneven pacing ultimately detracted from my overall enjoyment. It's a decent read, especially if you're a fan of the unrequited love trope, but be prepared for some frustrating moments along the way. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
