Description
When the company s*ave Yuji Matsutomo came back home late due to late-night overtime work, Saotome Mio, who was next door, was stuck outside without a key. After jumping from veranda to veranda, Matsutomo opened the door and accidentally said “okaerinasai.” 「I thought no one would say that to me for the rest of my life. If you could, please tell that to me again tomorrow.」 「Though I come back home late due to overtime…..」 「I’ll hire you for $3000 a month!」 Matsutomo was pulled out from a black company by the power of someone elite that works in a leading company. My next job destination is Saotome-san. And the job description is to say “Okaerinasai” to the lonely Saotome-san.

My Thoughts on I’m Being Paid ¥ 300,000 a Month to Say ‘Okaeri, Kyo MO Ganbatta NE’ to a Hardworking Neighbor Oneesan Who Earns ¥500,000 a Month but Doesn’t Have a Use for the Money, Which Is Really Fun
This title is definitely a mouthful, and after diving in, I have mixed feelings about whether the story lives up to its whimsical promise. It's a slice-of-life tale with a somewhat bizarre premise, and while it has its moments, it also falls short in some key areas.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the potential for a cute and heartwarming story. The idea of a young man being paid to simply welcome home a hardworking, lonely woman seemed ripe with opportunities for sweet interactions and perhaps even a budding romance. The first few chapters definitely delivered on that front, creating a light and fun atmosphere.
What Works Well
The slice-of-life aspects are undoubtedly the strongest part of the novel. The random, spontaneous conversations between the two main characters are genuinely enjoyable. There's a certain charm in watching them navigate their unconventional arrangement and find comfort in each other's company. The translation is also well-done, making the reading experience smooth and immersive, though I did notice the translator's penchant for using Japanese honorifics and expressions, which might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Areas of Concern
However, as I read on, I found myself agreeing with some of the criticisms. The "early romance" tag feels misleading. While there are hints of potential, the story doesn't really develop a romantic connection. Instead, it focuses on the transactional nature of their relationship, which can be a bit off-putting. I can see how some might find the male lead's willingness to accept money without addressing the underlying issues of the female lead's loneliness to be a significant flaw.
Moreover, the plot can feel aimless at times. There are only so many chapters about playing Uno or cooking meals that I can read before I start to lose interest. The lack of a clear direction or overarching conflict makes the story feel stagnant, preventing it from reaching its full potential.
Final Verdict
"I’m Being Paid…" is a decent slice-of-life novel with a unique premise, but it's not without its flaws. If you're looking for a lighthearted and relaxing read with no heavy plot, you might enjoy it. However, if you're expecting a strong romance or a compelling storyline, you might be disappointed. Overall, I'd say it's a 3/5 – enjoyable in small doses, but not a must-read.
